The TaLL TaLLk: The Student

As more and more big and tall men start to become interested in the modeling side of the fashion world the talent pool becomes wider. One thing I think that it’s important to do is to uplift others and help them in any way you may be able too. I was introduced to this next interviewee by a mutual friend and I immediately thought I should interview him for my blog, I present to you Darryl Perry, The Student!

Who is Darryl Perry?

A guy from Dayton, Oh who loves music, his friends, family, and food!

When did you take notice of your height or that you were tall?

I took notice from an early age that I was tall. Growing up in school my size was something I got roasted on!

How did your height make you different?

So my height made me different in a couple of ways. I noticed that when someone who was smaller than me would do something like move across the room or stand in a group it wouldn’t be as noticeable but when I did it, everyone noticed and it made me feel like a spectacle. I realized that being big you have to move differently and act differently.

How often do you get asked questions about your height and size?

I get asked all the time about my size…When you are 6’7 335lbs you are bigger than most security guards, and bouncers, you are also as big or if not bigger than most NFL players people comment all the time with comments like “I know you played football” or “How much do you bench” or “ I would sure hate to mess with you”. You are constantly reminded!

Did your height/size impact your life differently over the years?

As I have gotten older being big has helped me a lot more than hurt me…I get offered security jobs, modeling work, I also sing so when I walk on stage people automatically look at me and listen to what I have to say out of curiosity..at least for the first few seconds! I get a lot more positive attention than negative attention now…

What are some of your biggest challenges when it comes to shopping?

For me, I am a 48 waist 32 or 34 long so finding pants that fit is always struggle! Also, I have a size 16 foot so it’s very tough to find shoes that I like and can afford in my size…I normally just go with what’s offered.

How would you describe your style?

Well, I would say that I am a casual dresser but I love to be comfortable…I will never shy away from the chance to get sexy though hah.

What are some brands that you always wear?

I love Levis, Champion never disappoints when it comes to shirts or hoodies, I like the casual look so Vans and Converse are often worn…I also like jordans as well when it comes to shoes.

What are your top 3 must-haves as a big & tall guy?

Good Cologne or in my case oils…Comfortable shoes…Confidence

What made you decide to get into big and tall modeling?

I think that there are a lot of guys like me who grew up insecure and hating themselves. It has taken me a long time to get to this point of “Confidence” and I wanted an outlet to express that…There was no other way to do that than Big and tall modeling…Showing that though you may have rolls or “Man boobs” you are still good looking!

How has modeling been going for you and modeling jobs coming up?

Modeling has been going good for me so far I am learning that it is all about the work that you put in, like anything in life. I love it when a photographer is able to capture a part of me that I have never seen before. It has really been good for me. I have some photographers that I am wanting to and some models that I am hoping to collab with. No set dates right now but that will be changing!

I would Invite Brotha Daymond John the CEO of FUBU.

I would invite Quincy Jones.

I would also invite Josh Dye, the first big and tall model signed to DXL.

Being that it’s February, which means Valentine’s Day, how would you describe a perfect date that you would take a special lady on?

I would have her come over and I would cook and just have a conversation and some drinks…Then if we made it to the second part we would go hear some music somewhere and just have a good time…A brotha loves to get down!

Name three songs you have in constant rotation now, and why?

“No Guidance”, by Chris Brown, because it has a nice beat and the flow is crazy.

“Ask of You, by Raphael Sadiq, it is just a feel-good song!

“Set it Off’, by Lil Boosie, that song just gets me hype and ready for the gym!

What do you do to stay fit, what type of workouts are you into?

Well, I do 30-second sprints on the treadmill to get my heart rate up and get a good sweat going. Then I do heavy resistance training in the form of squats, Deadlifts, bench press, Lat Pulldowns, etc…
